Knitting abbreviation Pwise stands for purlwise. This refers to how the right-hand needle is inserted into a working stitch on the left-hand needle. When you slip a stitch purlwise, you preserve its position on the needle, unlike knitwise, which brings the front loop to the back and the back loop to the front and twists the stitch.
To work a stitch purlwise, insert the right-hand needle from right to left into the front loop of the working stitch. The tip of the right-hand needle will point to the left and towards you. Slip the working stitch off the left-hand needle onto the right-hand needle.
