Knitting abbreviation PU stands for pick up stitches. This comes up in various situations. You might be asked to pick up stitches at the bottom or top of your work, in which case you use already formed stitches to ensure you have the right amount. You might also be asked to pick up stitches on the side of your work. Since stitches and rows tend to have differing numbers, a good rule to follow is to pick up 3 stitches for every 4 rows. This means you pick up 3 and skip 1. This creates an even fabric.
