Knitting abbreviation P stands for purl. It is one of the most fundamental stitches in knitting. It's the opposite of a knit stitch. It places the worked loop on the opposite side of the new loop, leaving the bump facing you.

To make a purl stitch, have your yarn in front of your work, insert the right hand needle into the front loop from back to front so that the tip of the right hand needle points towards you and to the left, wrap yarn around the right hand needle, draw the yarn through the stitch, slide the worked stitch off the left hand needle leaving the new stitch on the right hand needle.
